43RD ILOILO PRISAA MEET
NOVEMBER 26, CPU GYM. IDC MEDICS once again showed their might in the 43rd Iloilo PRISAA Meet. Volleyball Men cruised their way to an easy 3 set victory against the UI wildcats 25-22, 25-21 and 25-11. There was some challenge in the first set with the wildcats racing to an early lead. But during the crunch time the medics simply dished out magnificent plays orchestrated setter Ian Gallofin. In the next 2 sets the medics tamed the wildcats with a variety of quick plays, running and booming spikes. The medics finished the tournament without losing a set for their 7th straight Iloilo PRISAA championships. They are also the 6-time WV Regional Champion and 2-time silver medalist in the National PRISAA.
It was a different story in volleyball women. The Medics volleybelles had to struggle against upset conscious CPU centralians. Their championship match was one of the most thrilling encounters ever. Sporting a twice to beat advantage, the medics seemed poised to an easy victory as they took the first set 25-22. They have beaten the same team in an easy fashion 2 days earlier in the elimination round. Bolstered by the home court crowd, the centralians fought back overwhelming the medics in the next two sets.
Coach Patrona reminded the players that they are fighting a highly motivated team and they have to match their intensity in order to win. The crucial 4th set was highly contested but eventually went the medics' way. The final 5th set was the real test. Team IDC raced to a 4 point advantage 8-4 before they changed court. The centralians refused to go away and came back hard. The rallies were long and the crowd were electrified by the thrilling encounter. It was difficult to hear the referee's whistle as partisans exchange cheers - "IDC,IDC, IDC..." countered by "CPU, CPU, CPU...".
The score was tied 13 all with IDC serving. It was the turn of the centralians to commit 2 successive elementary errors. The last serve by Aiza Pama hit the back line and the 2 centralians got confused as who would receive the ball. The final score was 15-13. In the end it was "heart" and experience that made the difference. The Medics' earned their 4th straight Iloilo PRISAA Championships.
